Post #8: Open question benchmark essay

Prompt: Select a novel, play, or epic poem that features a character whose origins are unusual or mysterious.  Then write an essay in which you analyze how these origins shape the character and that character's relationships, and how the origins contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole. My Essay: In Sophocles' Antigone, Antigone has a gloomy past that aids in the shaping of the strength and loyalty we see in Antigone's character throughout the play.  Antigone suffered from the loss of her brother.  Because of his actions, it was decided he would not be allowed to have a proper burial.  This was decided by another of their own flesh and blood, Kreon.  Antigone decided she wasn't going to stand for this and she was going to bury him herself.  Once news of this incident made its way to Kreon, Antigone was sure to let him know that she was the one who committed the act and she was ready to accept the consequences for her actions. My Essay: In his 1852 novel, Nathaniel Hawthorne creates multiple attitudes towards Zenobia from the perspective of the narrator.  To examine the narrators perspective on Zenobia, Hawthorne provides detailed examples of the narrators overall attitude of Zenobia.  He does this by using strong diction and dramatic tone shifts throughout the passage. Multiple tone shifts are seen throughout the passage.  Towards the beginning, the narrator has obvious infatuation with Zenobia.  He is taken away by her.  The very firs...

Original song lyrics: I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine Gotta gotta be down Because I want it all It started out with a kiss How did it end up like this? It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss Now I'm falling asleep And she's calling a cab While he's having a smoke And she's taking a drag Now they're going to bed And my stomach is sick And it's all in my head But she's touching his chest Now, he takes off her dress Now, let me go And I just can't look - it's killing me And taking control Jealousy, turning saints into the sea Turning through sick lullabies  [acoustic version of the song says: "Swimming through sick lullabies"] Choking on your alibis But it's just the price I pay Destiny is calling me Open up my eager eyes ‘Cause I'm Mr Brightside I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine Gotta gotta be down Because I want it all It started out with a kiss How did it end up like ...
